Methanol Toxicity in Antarctica

An interesting piece discussing the investigation of a South Pole scientist's unusual death.

Extreme social isolation, alcohol abuse, and psychopathology bred a bizarre tale. I was reminded of the X-Files episode "Ice" involving foul-play and paranormal activity at an arctic research station.

Medicine in Media: Terrible Doctoring in "Hot Shots!" (1991)

Topper: Doctor!
Doctor: What happened?
Topper: Plane crash.
Doctor: I gotta work fast, I got a lunch.
Topper: I think you're missing the big picture here, doc!
Doctor: Nurse, check his penis. Is it longer than mine?
Nurse: Uhhh, no, doctor!
Doctor: Good. Now, this is going to hurt.
Patient: Argh!
Doctor: Nurse, give me 15cc's of morphine quickly!
Topper: Do you think you can save him?
Doctor: Can't be sure. I'm not a very good doctor.
*injection of morphine into doctor's arm*
Doctor: That's good. Thank you, nurse.
(to Topper) You'll have to wait here.
Topper: You going to be alright, buddy?
Patient: I'm in a hospital! What could go wrong?
